Information For Authors

Interested in submitting to this journal? We recommend that you review the About the Journal page for the journal's section policies, as well as the Author Guidelines. Authors need to register with the journal prior to submitting or, if already registered, can simply log in and begin the five-step process.

Thank you for your interest in submitting to JSSME. Below are our submission and author guidelines — please read carefully and follow them when preparing your manuscript.

1. Registration & Online Submission

Authors must register and log in to submit manuscripts and to track submission status via our online system.

The online submission must contain a single anonymised manuscript file and any separate files (tables, figures, appendices) as requested by the submission form.

2. Scope & Eligibility

JSSME is a peer-reviewed open-access journal publishing original research across the social sciences and related interdisciplinary fields (e.g., political science, sociology, anthropology, education, media studies, business, history).

We publish both thematic issues and individual articles that offer theoretically and/or empirically grounded contributions with international relevance and comparative perspectives.

Only previously unpublished manuscripts will be considered. Papers under review at other journals, already published in another English-language journal, or submitted as part of a monograph/edited volume will be rejected. Manuscripts based on research reports or publications in non-English journals may be considered.

3. Pre-Submission Consultation

Authors may email an abstract to the editors for informal guidance on fit prior to formal submission (this is optional and does not replace formal submission).

4. Peer Review & Editorial Screening

All submissions undergo an initial editorial screening. Manuscripts that do not meet our formatting/content standards or scope will not proceed to peer review.

Suitable manuscripts are sent for anonymous peer review to at least two independent reviewers. Reviewers are selected to avoid institutional or personal conflicts of interest. Reviews are submitted using a uniform editorial form in our submission system.

Review outcomes and editorial decisions are communicated to authors through a Report to the Author(s).

5. Decision Rules & Procedures

Decisions follow the reviewers’ recommendations and editorial judgement. Typical pathways are:

  • Both reviewers: Accept → Editors make final acceptance decision.

  • Both reviewers: Reject → Editors make final rejection decision.

  • Both: Minor revisions → Author invited to revise; revised manuscript is forwarded to editors.

  • Both: Major revisions (Resubmit for review) → Author invited to revise; revised manuscript is re-assessed by original reviewers or a third reviewer.

  • One favourable + one unfavourable → Author invited to revise; revised manuscript forwarded for a third review; editors take final decision thereafter.

  • One favourable + one minor revision → Revised manuscript is forwarded to the editors without further reviewer reassessment.

  • One favourable + one major revision → Author invited to revise; revised version is returned to the reviewer who requested the major changes.

  • One unfavourable + one minor/major revision → Editors may either reject or request revision; if revised, the manuscript may be sent to a third reviewer.

  • If reviewers cannot reach consensus after revision, editors may appoint a third reviewer or make a final editorial decision.

Timelines:

  • Editors typically have two weeks after receiving reviews to make the editorial decision.

  • The whole review process is expected to be completed within 10–16 weeks from receipt of the manuscript, depending on reviewer availability and number of review rounds. Editors and the Editorial Board are not liable for reviewer-caused delays.

6. Manuscript Length & Structure

Length: 6,000–8,000 words (inclusive of footnotes, tables, captions, and references).

Order of components:

    1. Title page (submitted separately to preserve anonymity)

    2. Anonymous manuscript including:

      • Abstract (150–200 words) — should state research questions, key argument(s), methodology, and main findings. The abstract must be distinct from the opening paragraph.

      • Four to six keywords

      • Main text with numbered headings and footnotes

      • References

      • Tables and figures (each on separate pages with captions)

      • Appendix (if any)

Anonymity: The main manuscript must contain no author-identifying information (name, affiliation, acknowledgements, or first-person references to your own work). References to your own prior work should be in third person. Authors of accepted papers will be asked to provide bios and acknowledgements after peer review and acceptance.

7. Formatting Requirements

File format: MS Word (.doc or .docx) (MS Word 2007 or later).

Font: Times New Roman, 10 pt.

Line spacing: Double spaced for main text, footnotes, and references.

Alignment: Left aligned (do not justify). Do not use header/footer or page numbers.

Headings: Short; numbered manually. Do not rely on automatic numbering styles that reveal metadata.

Paragraphs: No extra paragraph spacing; use standard first-line indentation where appropriate.

Tables and figures: Each must have a title and source note. Number tables and figures separately (e.g., Table 1, Figure 1) and indicate placement in the text (e.g., [Table 1 here]). Place tables/figures on separate pages at the end of the manuscript file or upload as separate files as required by the submission system.

8. Tips for Preserving Anonymity

Remove names and affiliations from the manuscript and file properties.

Avoid first-person references to your own work; use third person.

Omit acknowledgements from the submitted manuscript.

Remove metadata/hidden information from Word documents (use “Inspect Document” or equivalent).

9. Style & Language

Write clearly and avoid excessive jargon. Use a readable, scholarly style.

Use consistent British or American English spelling throughout.

Use italics sparingly (for emphasis and book/newspaper/novel titles); do not use bold or underlining. Use single quotes for quotations, double quotes only for a quotation within a quotation.

Spell out numbers under 10 in full. Use the word “per cent” in text (use “%” only in tables).

Prefer plural pronouns or passive constructions to “he/she” where appropriate.

Explain acronyms at first use.

10. Footnotes, Citations & References

JSSME prefers footnotes to endnotes; keep footnotes concise.

Citation style: APA (author-date). In-text examples:

One author: (Hall, 2011).

Two authors: (Rogstad & Midtbøen, 2010).

Three or more: (Mazzoleni et al., 2003).

Page numbers where applicable: (Hall, 2011, pp. 49–50).

Quotations: Use single inverted commas (e.g., ‘text’) and cite with page number: (‘quote’ (Author, year, p. X)).

References list: Include only works cited in the text. Provide English translations for non-English titles in square brackets after the original title. Provide DOIs where available. Use the Latin alphabet for names and transliterations.

Examples (follow APA formatting):

Book: Sen, A. (1999). Development as freedom. Oxford University Press.

Journal article: Williams, P. (1982). The invisibility of the Kalderas of Paris. Urban Anthropology, 11(3–4), 315–346.

Edited volume chapter: Kuljić, T. (2012). Anti-antifašizam [Anti-antifascism]. In M. Beslin & P. Atanacković (Eds.), Antifašizam pred izazovima savremenosti (pp. 55–70). AKO.

Web resource: Provide full URL and access date if the item is not otherwise citable; include DOI when available.

11. Figures, Tables & Data

All tables and figures should be titled and numbered, with source(s) shown in a note below each item. Supply high-quality images and data files where applicable. Authors are responsible for obtaining permissions for copyrighted material.

12. Post-Acceptance

After acceptance, authors will be asked to submit a final, non-anonymised version that includes a short author bio and acknowledgements. Authors grant the journal the right of first publication while retaining copyright. Three months after publication the accepted version may be licensed under a Creative Commons Attribution License for wider sharing, subject to editorial approval. Authors may enter additional non-exclusive distribution agreements provided the journal’s initial publication is acknowledged.

13. Ethical Standards

Authors must ensure originality, proper citation of sources, and declare any conflicts of interest. Plagiarism, duplicate submission, or misrepresentation of data is unacceptable and will result in rejection and possible further action according to our ethical policies.

14. Production & Contact

JSSME is open access. For questions about submissions, the review process, or suitability, contact the editorial office via the submission system or the email listed on the journal website.

Please apply these guidelines carefully before submitting. Following them helps speed the editorial and peer-review process and reduces the risk of desk rejection. We look forward to your contribution.
